Process & Production

Clase Azul Blanco Ahumado was created to explore the transformative relationship between fire and agave, reviving ancestral production techniques to create the first intentionally smoky tequila expression in the Clase Azul México portfolio.

The tequila begins with 100% Blue Agave grown in Los Altos de Jalisco, a region renowned for its high-elevation agave cultivation.

Its defining production step occurs during cooking.

Rather than relying exclusively on the masonry-oven cooking process associated with other Clase Azul tequilas, the agave for Blanco Ahumado is slowly cooked in a traditional underground pit oven fueled by firewood and volcanic rock.

The intense heat from the volcanic stones and the smoke generated by the wood surround the agave during cooking. This process transforms the raw agave while introducing the subtle smoky characteristics that distinguish Blanco Ahumado from conventional blanco tequila.

After cooking, the agave continues through fermentation and distillation to create a clear, unaged tequila.

No barrel maturation is used. The smoke character therefore comes from the agave-cooking process rather than oak aging or barrel finishing.

The finished tequila is bottled at an elevated 45% ABV (90 proof), giving Blanco Ahumado additional structure and intensity compared with Clase Azul Plata.

Appearance

Brilliantly crystal clear with silver highlights.

Despite the use of smoke during production, Blanco Ahumado remains completely clear because it undergoes no barrel maturation.

Clase Azul describes the tequila as full-bodied, providing a substantial texture that complements its elevated 90-proof bottling strength.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Aromas of smoked agave are joined by fresh notes of plum and red apple, creating a balance between smoke, fruit, and the natural character of the cooked agave.

Palate: Full-bodied and silky with the depth of smoked agave balanced by the brightness of fresh lemon and a distinctive mineral character.

Finish: Silky and persistent, leaving a lingering smoky finish alongside citrus, mineral, and cooked-agave notes.

What Makes It Special

Clase Azul Blanco Ahumado represents a significant departure from the style of the brand's traditional Plata tequila.

While both are clear, unaged expressions, Blanco Ahumado introduces an entirely different production philosophy through its use of an underground pit oven.

Cooking Blue Agave with firewood and volcanic rock connects the expression to older methods of agave-spirit production. The smoke created during this process interacts directly with the agave, producing smoky characteristics before fermentation and distillation ever begin.

This distinction is important because Blanco Ahumado's smoky profile does not come from barrels or artificial barrel influence. It originates during the transformation of the agave itself.

The expression is also bottled at 90 proof, compared with the 80-proof strength of Clase Azul Plata, providing greater body and concentration.

Its decanter was designed to visually communicate this production process.

The transparent glass features a smoky appearance inspired by the smoke rising during agave cooking, while the dark textured ceramic base evokes the volcanic rocks used inside the underground oven.

Copper-colored details on the cap and emblem reference the copper stills used during distillation, connecting each element of the presentation to a stage in the tequila-making process.

Together, its Los Altos agave, ancestral pit-oven cooking method, unaged presentation, elevated proof, and process-inspired decanter make Blanco Ahumado one of the most distinctive expressions in the Clase Azul México tequila collection.

How to Enjoy

Clase Azul Blanco Ahumado Tequila is ideally enjoyed neat in a flute-style glass, allowing its smoke, fruit, citrus, mineral, and agave characteristics to develop naturally.

Allow the tequila to rest briefly after pouring before exploring the aroma. The initial smoked-agave character gradually reveals fresh plum and red apple before transitioning into the fuller citrus and mineral qualities of the palate.

At 90 proof, Blanco Ahumado has enough intensity to deliver a substantial sipping experience while maintaining a silky texture.

Its smoky profile also makes it particularly interesting alongside foods prepared over open flame. Grilled seafood, roasted vegetables, citrus-driven dishes, and grilled meats can complement the relationship between smoke, mineral character, fruit, and agave found in the tequila.

Brand Story

Clase Azul México was founded by Arturo Lomelí with a vision centered on sharing Mexico's spirits, culture, traditions, and craftsmanship with the world.

Across its tequila and mezcal portfolio, Clase Azul explores different aspects of Mexican agave culture through both the spirits themselves and the artisan vessels created to present them.

Clase Azul Blanco Ahumado expands that philosophy by looking toward ancestral methods of transforming agave with fire.

Its Blue Agave is grown in Los Altos de Jalisco and slowly cooked underground with firewood and volcanic rock, producing a delicately smoky tequila while maintaining the brightness and clarity of an unaged expression.

The decanter tells the same story visually, incorporating elements inspired by smoke, volcanic rock, fire, and copper distillation.

Bottled at a robust 90 proof, Clase Azul Blanco Ahumado brings together Blue Agave, fire, volcanic stone, smoke, and traditional craftsmanship in a distinctive interpretation of blanco tequila.
